Studying in the Netherlands: don’t forget your residence permit

Studying in the Netherlands has numerous advantages: they are renowned for their excellent education, which is also affordable. The Netherlands offers a wide range of English-taught programmes. So, studying in the Netherlands might lead to finding an interesting job as well. However, to be allowed to study in the Netherlands, you’ll need to get a residence permit. What is a residence permit?

A residence permit is a permit that allows you to reside in the Netherlands for a longer period of time. This could be to study here for a few years, but it could also be because of work or to visit family. In general, when staying in the Netherlands for a period longer than ninety days, you’ll need a residence permit. There are two types of permits within the regular residence permit: one for an undetermined period, and one for a determined period. The determined period permit is valid for a maximum of five years. Generally, you can request one and then extend it every year (up to a maximum of five). A residence permit for an undetermined period can only be requested once you’ve been living in the Netherlands for at least five years, and have had a residence permit for a determined period. However, you will need to also have an integration diploma and an independent income in order to receive the permit for an undetermined period. 

How to request a residence permit?

In order to be able to request a residence permit, you’ll need to comply with some requirements. First and foremost, you’ll have to go to the Netherlands for a certain reason, which could be your study, work, or to visit family. Additionally, you’ll need a valid passport, and you have to prove that your not of any danger to the Netherlands. Then, you’ll have to request an assessment of the EU-law, which you can do only and costs €64. Afterwards, you’ll have to request a visa, which would cost €192. Once this is done, the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) will either approve or disapprove your request. Once it has been approved, you’re officially allowed to study and stay in the Netherlands for a longer period.
